Nassau vs. the Exumas: How to Choose for Your First Bahamas Trip

Palm Escape • January 2026 • 8 min read

It's the question we get more than any other — Nassau or Exumas? And the honest answer is that it depends entirely on how you want to feel. Not where you want to go. How you want to feel when you get there.

Nassau and the Exumas are two completely different experiences. One is energy, culture, and the feeling of a city wrapped in the Caribbean. The other is seclusion, silence, and water so blue it genuinely doesn't look real. Choosing between them is less about which one is "better" and more about which one is right for you — right now, for this trip, for this occasion.

After years of planning Bahamas trips for couples, here's how we think through the decision — and the questions we ask every couple who comes to us unsure.

First: What does Nassau actually feel like?

Nassau surprises people — in a good way. Most couples who haven't been expect something small and sleepy. What they find is a destination with real personality: a mix of colonial architecture, vibrant local culture, boutique restaurants, and beaches that deliver exactly what you picture when you close your eyes and think "Bahamas."

Nassau is where you go when you want options. You want to be able to walk to dinner one night, take a boat to a private sandbar the next morning, and spend an afternoon exploring the kind of neighborhood streets that feel genuinely alive. There's rhythm here. Energy. The feeling of being somewhere that has a story.

Cable Beach and the western corridor offer some of the most beautiful resort experiences in the entire Caribbean. Paradise Island — connected to Nassau by bridge — is home to some of the most iconic properties in the Bahamas. And beyond the main resorts, there are corners of Nassau that most visitors never find.

"Nassau is for the couple that wants to feel alive on their trip. The Exumas is for the couple that wants to feel away."

And what does the Exumas feel like?

The Exumas is a different kind of feeling entirely. It's 365 cays stretching across some of the most vivid water in the world — turquoise bleeding into teal bleeding into deep navy, all of it impossibly clear. It's quiet in a way that Nassau isn't. Unhurried in a way that most places aren't anymore.

When couples come back from the Exumas, they don't usually talk about restaurants or bars. They talk about the water. The light at 7am when the cay is still quiet. The way a full day on the boat felt like the first real exhale they'd taken in months. The Exumas has a way of recalibrating you — and that's exactly why some couples need it.

The main hub is Great Exuma, where you'll find George Town, a handful of strong resort options, and access to boat charters that take you out to the private cays and sandbars that make this destination famous. For couples looking for something even more exclusive, the smaller cays and private island experiences offer a level of seclusion that's genuinely rare.

How we help couples choose

Rather than asking "which do you prefer," we ask couples a different set of questions — because the answer is usually in how they describe what they're looking for, not in any checklist.

Choose Nassau if...

Nassau

You want a range of experiences — beach, culture, dining, nightlife

This is your first Bahamas trip and you want to understand the destination

You prefer having options rather than total seclusion

You're celebrating with activities as the centerpiece

You want strong resort infrastructure and easy logistics

You plan to mix beach days with city exploration

Choose the Exumas if...

The Exumas

The water is the whole point — nothing matters more

You want to feel genuinely away from everything

You're celebrating something and want it to feel extraordinary

Seclusion and quiet are what you're actually craving

You're comfortable with fewer restaurant options in exchange for more privacy

A full day on a private charter boat sounds perfect

What about doing both?

It's possible — and some couples love the idea of splitting a trip between Nassau and the Exumas. A few nights in Nassau to arrive, settle in, and explore, followed by a few nights in the Exumas for the deeper escape. This works particularly well for couples with 7+ nights and a higher budget, since logistics between the two destinations add time and cost.

For most couples coming for 4–5 nights, we recommend committing fully to one destination rather than splitting the trip. You'll get more out of going deep into one experience than you will from a surface-level taste of both.

Our Honest Take

For first-time couples: we usually recommend Nassau.

Not because it's better — it isn't, it's just different — but because it gives first-time visitors the fullest picture of what the Bahamas offers. The Exumas is extraordinary, and it deserves a trip where you can give it your full attention. Once you've experienced Nassau, you'll know exactly what you're choosing when you book the Exumas next time.
