5 Things We Check Before Recommending a Bahamas Resort to a Couple
Palm Escape • December 2026 • 7 min read
Not every resort that calls itself luxury actually delivers it. And a five-star rating on a booking site tells you very little about whether a property is right for you — as a couple, for this specific trip, for this occasion.
Over years of planning Bahamas trips, we've developed a checklist that goes well beyond star ratings and glossy photos. These are the five things we look at — and honestly, look for — before we'd ever put our name behind a resort recommendation.
01
Where it actually sits relative to the water
"Beachfront" means different things at different properties. Some resorts use the word loosely — a short walk from the beach, a shared beach with the public, or a beach that looks beautiful in photos but is rocky or shallow in reality. Before we recommend a resort, we verify the actual water access: Is the beach swimmable? Is it private? Is it the kind of beach you can spend a full day on comfortably? For couples, the relationship between the resort and the water matters enormously — and it's one of the first things we confirm.
02
What recent guests actually say — not the average rating
A 4.6 star rating across 2,000 reviews tells us almost nothing. What we look for is patterns in recent reviews — specifically from couples. We read what people say about the staff, the responsiveness, the food quality, the noise level, and the gap between what they expected and what they got. A resort that consistently surprises guests positively is worth more than one with a higher average score built on outdated reviews. We also look for how the property responds to negative feedback — that alone tells you a great deal about the culture of the place.
"A star rating tells you how a property compares to others. It doesn't tell you whether it's right for you."
03
Whether the vibe matches the couple
Some resorts are designed for families. Some cater to large groups. Some are party properties that happen to have beautiful rooms. None of these are wrong — but none of them are right for every couple. We look at the demographic the property actually attracts, the events it hosts, the energy of its common spaces, and whether the overall environment will feel like it was made for two people who want to be present with each other. A resort can be objectively excellent and still be the wrong fit for a couple celebrating a birthday or anniversary who want to feel seen and away from the noise.
04
The quality and variety of on-site dining
For a 4-night trip, dinner is part of the experience — not just sustenance. We look at whether the on-site restaurants are worth staying for, or whether you'll need to leave the property every night for a good meal. For resorts in more remote areas of the Bahamas (some parts of the Exumas, for example), the dining options on property matter even more because off-property options can be limited. We also look at the bar program, the breakfast quality, and whether the resort has thought intentionally about the full culinary experience — not just one flagship restaurant to put in the brochure.
05
How the resort handles special occasions
This one is less measurable but just as important. We look at whether a property has a track record of going the extra mile for couples celebrating something. Do they acknowledge birthdays and anniversaries proactively? Is there a concierge team that can arrange something meaningful — a private dinner on the beach, a room decorated on arrival, a thoughtful welcome amenity? For our clients celebrating a birthday or anniversary, the difference between a resort that treats you like every other guest and one that makes the occasion feel recognized is enormous. We know which properties do this well — and which ones treat it as an afterthought.
Why this matters for your trip
Choosing a resort is one of the most consequential decisions in trip planning — and it's also one of the most overwhelming. The volume of options, the inconsistency of online reviews, and the gap between marketing and reality make it genuinely difficult to choose well without experience or local knowledge.
This is precisely why resort vetting is one of the most valuable things we do for our clients. Whether you're booking a Weekend Escape package, a Palm Consult, or a Full Concierge experience, every resort recommendation we make has gone through this checklist. We don't recommend anything we wouldn't stay in ourselves.
If you have a property in mind that you're considering, we're happy to share our honest assessment. And if you're starting from scratch, we'll point you in the right direction from the first conversation.
